Combating isolation

Community Networkis the only UK conference call charity that uses the proceeds from telephone conferences to support isolated people in their homes.

Many people are socially marginalised and lonely due to: illness; disability; old age; remote rural locations or the caring responsibilities of others.

Here is an interview where organisers and participants discuss the group benefits:

To alleviate this isolation, Community Network runs teleconferences that re-connect isolated people with their community. Here are some examples:

Telephone Book Clubs

- create a perfect incentive to keep reading and remain intellectually stimulated for people restricted to the home environment. Meetings allow members to discuss books, thoughts and ideas.

Carers' Telephone Groups

- provide a welcome break in carers' demanding routines. Sessions offer a secure, confidential opportunity to talk about sensitive issues and share supportive stories.

Faith Groups

- teleconferences can link a local church, temple, mosque or synagogue to its housebound worshippers, allowing them to remain active in their faith community even though they cannot leave their home.

Befriending Telephone Groups

- regular conference call sessions can create virtual social clubs where group members are free to discuss whatever topics spring to mind.

Rural Telephone Groups

- can link people who live in remote and sparsely populated areas with little or no transport links for much-needed conversations and a chance to catch up on local news.
